2019 Student Academy Awards: Sarah Gross’ Boléro

USC had two films advance for the Student Academy Awards this year, each completely different from the other. The one thing they happen to share is cinematographer Brian M. Tang. Director Sarah Gross’ dystopian sci-fi, Boléro, is a high-concept action caper about a woman seeking vengeance in an Orwellian police state.

Maya’s Truck

Maya finds herself living in the back of a trailer truck, and a sequence that our production started planning from the beginning was a time lapse motion tracking backward to show the evolution of Maya’s living space. In the end the final shot is a composite of over 80 different takes, each individual dressing change being planned in advance.
